2016 is almost at its close and it’s time to put the wheels in motion to ensure 2017 is the best year of travel yet. We want to GO further, SEE plenty and DO more! As an office, we’ve seen a good chunk of the world and we want to share some of our favourites and some places on our wish list to help you find inspiration for your travels.
Dubai, seaplane flight with Seawings
Why you should go there in 2017: If ever there was a city where everything is possible, it’s Dubai, and that’s why we love it! Acclaimed by the New York Times as the number one thing to do in Dubai, the Seawings seaplane flight is one of the most unique and exhilarating ways to see Dubai. During the 40-minute flight, you’ll soar over the attractions of Dubai, with large windows to allow for amazing views. You’ll fly by the Burj Khalifa, Burf Al-Arab Hotel, Palm Jumeirah and The World Islands and so much more.
Cape Town, Cape Winelands
Why you should go there in 2017: With the great dollar value against the rand, now is a great time to visit. The Cape Winelands offers lush scenery, spectacular mountain backdrops and the opportunity to sample excellent wines. It’s a favourite for locals & visitors alike. The rolling hills and vineyards are divided into six districts – Constantia, Stellenbosch, Franschhoek, Paarl, Robertson & Wellington. The region is renowned for its crisp white and classic French-style red wines, awe-inspiring food and vast estates. What more could you want?
PS. On a side note, book a meal at The Test Kitchen in Cape Town– recently named number 22 restaurant in the world (get in early)!
USA, 7 Wonders of Oregon
Why you should go there in 2017: “Because our Wonders aren’t just for taking pictures of – to truly say you’ve seen our Wonders, you have to get out of the car, hike down from the scenic vista and feel them beneath your feet” (Travel Oregon). You may not have enough time to see them all, but you’ll see some of them on a 13 days / 12 nights self-drive of Oregon – Wonders of Oregon. And the great things is that you start and end the tour in Portland – on Lonely Planet’s Top 10 Cities to visit in 2017. Be the trendsetter, not the follower!
The 7 Wonders of Oregon
- Mt Hood – always snowcapped and can be seen from Portland.
- Oregon Coast – tidal pools, whale watching, lighthouses and sand dunes.
- Columbia River Gorge – dozens of waterfalls line the historic Columbia River Highway.
- Painted Hills – millions of years of history revealed in the layers of mountains of earth one colour at a time.
- Smith Rock – towers of volcanic ash rise like the spires of a cathedral – for hiking or climbing.
- The Wallowas – the land carved by the Oregon Trail and hardly changed since pioneers crossed by wagon.
- Crater Lake – surrounded by cliffs almost 2,000ft high and home to old grown forests.
Indonesia, Komodo Island
Why you should go there in 2017: Bali is undoubtedly a popular destination for Australians – so Komodo Island is perfect for travellers who have visited before and are looking to venture further. Komodo Island is one of the 17,508 islands that compose the Republic of Indonesia, and is the habitat of the Komodo dragon. Growing up to three metres long, it is arguably, Indonesia’s best-conserved large animal, protected by law. But the Komodo dragon isn’t the only attraction – the island is home to Pink Beach, or Pantai Merah, one of the seven pink beaches on the planet.
Oman, 7 days / 6 nights Wonders & Luxury
Why you should go there in 2017: A perception that some may have is that Oman is just desert – in fact, it’s far from it! It’s home to mountains, islands, reefs, oasis villages, fjords, beaches & desert sands. The local people are welcoming, there’s aromatic food, plus a history that goes back to the Stone Age. The Wonders & Luxury tour stays at three of the top five hotels in Oman – Alila Jabal Akhdar was in the Gold list for 2016 for Conde Nast Traveler. It also stays at The Chedi and Desert Camp – an ideal way to experience the best of Oman.
Canada, iconic polar bear experience
Why you should go there in 2017: Canada is celebrating its 150th anniversary as a nation, so needless to say, Canada will be huge in 2017. But we love this polar bear experience in Churchill because it’s unique and something for the adventurous. Churchill is eclectic and charming, but spending time on the Tundra Buggy – a specially constructed vehicle that travels across the frozen plains to the domain of the local polar bears – is where you’ll see the magic. You’ll spend plenty of time watching these majestic mammals and other arctic wildlife in their natural environment.
Fiji, diving off the Suncoast
Why you should go there in 2017: The diving along the Suncoast is out of this world – it is the soft coral capital of the world! We recommend staying at Volivoli Beach Resort – set on a headland amongst lush gardens. This resort re-opened on 1st November as it was devastated by Cyclone Winston – it would be great to visit this area that was so badly affected and get some much needed tourist dollars back into the area. Once you’ve had your diving fix here, tie it in with a Talona Trek which departs from the Suncoast as well.
New England, USA
Why you should go there in 2017: It’s the birthplace of America! It’s filled with rich history, cultural attractions, fascinating cities, scenic villages, and outdoor adventures. Sure, you may have visited Boston in the past, but there is wealth of diverse travel experiences within just a few hours drive of Boston’s international airport. Why not try somewhere different like Cape Cod & Martha’s Vineyard? Or what about sampling Vermont’s cheese and maple syrup, or visiting Hancock Shaker Village, home of the Quakers. By the way, if you love ice cream, did you know that Waterbury, Vermont, is the official home of Ben & Jerry’s?
The Cotswolds, UK
Why you should go there in 2017: It’s a very special, very wonderful place. It covers a huge area, running through five counties, giving you plenty to explore and come back for. What is wonderful is that each area has its own identity, with all those defining Cotswold features – golden stone and rolling hills. But what we’d really love to do is cycle through the countryside and discover its secrets. Visit the lively market towns, take a moment to appreciate the landscapes and of course, sample the local foods. There are gastro pubs, old inns, colourful cafes and fine dining all over the region.
Yukon, Aurora Borealis
Why you should go there in 2017: The Yukon is hot right now – bloggers are flocking there and our Instagram feeds are filled with gorgeous landscapes from the north-west part of Canada. And like we mentioned before – it’s going to be big year for Canada. But our 2017 wish is to witness the Northern Lights – Aurora Borealis, where lights appear in the sky in forms of patches or scattered clouds of light, arcs and shooting rays. Winter is the peak aurora viewing season and can be combined with the chance to experience some truly amazing activities – dog sledding, riding a snowmobile or even fishing on a frozen lake.
